During the winter months, the islands and peninsulas of the Puget Sound get tucked away in an ever-changing pattern of sleepy, grey clouds. As most of the outdoor people trek to the Cascades to play in the fresh snow, the recreational islands are left relatively empty. Last week we made a winter sail from Seattle to Blake Island, eventually pitching our tents on an empty beach facing the snowy peaks of the Olympic Mountains. Besides a lonely park ranger and a few families of deer, we had the island to ourselves and made the most of it.
