Peperomia argyreia 'Watermelon'

Peperomia plants come from the Amazon region of South America. They are semi-succulents with easy-to-grow care habits. There are over 1600 varieties of peperomias all belonging to the Pepper family. This specific variety is named after the watermelon for its similarity of appearance to the rind of a watermelon.   LIGHT: Bright, indirect light or direct morning sun. Originally found in the Caribbean, the micans is loved for its velvety sheen and colorfully varied foliage. In their natural habitat, micans will grow against a host tree and root into the bark. Allow your micans to trail for a long and delicate effect, or encourage climbing with a trellis or moss pole for more dense foliage.    LIGHT: Medium to bright, indirect light or some direct morning sun. Micans can survive in lower light, but the plant may become leggy. Avoid afternoon direct sun as it may burn the leaves. WATER: Water thoroughly so that water drains out the bottom of the pot, then allow the top 30% of soil to dry before watering again. Make sure the potting medium is fast-draining to prevent root rot. Do not overwater. Signs of overwatering might include water droplets or yellowing edges on the leaves. Signs of under-watering include brown leaf edges. Adding humidity to the environment is beneficial to increase leaf growth. TEMPERATURE: 60-80 degrees F. Pilea peperomioides, "Chinese Money Plant"

The Chinese money plant became popularized in minimally designed Scandinavian interiors, with its bright green circular-shaped leaves. Also known as the missionary plant, lefse plant, pancake plant, UFO plant it is actually originally from the southwestern Yunnan province of China. Popular lore maintains that a Norwegian missionary, Agnar Espegren, took cuttings home with him in the 1940s, and shared them with friends and family. Those plants were spread throughout Scandinavia, and eventually the world, as people passed cutting between friends. LIGHT: Bright indirect light or direct morning sun. Avoid strong afternoon sun. Rotate regularly to keep plant growing symmetrically. WATER: Allow top surface of soil to dry slightly between waterings. POTTING: Not recommended for potting in a container without a drain hole. Pot in a light airy mix with some peat moss. FERTILIZE: Spring through fall 1x/mo with 1/2 strength fertilizer  PROPAGATION: New growth or plantlets, can grow up through the soil and can separate from the mother plant. Follow the stem about an inch under, and use a clean, sharp knife to cut the baby plant free. The basal fronds are sterile and anchor the plant against trees. They also protect the plants roots. The fertile fronds bear spores for reproduction. Vegetable tanning takes more time but does not use the toxic compounds needed for chrome tanned leather. Aniline dyes soak into the leather leaving visible the natural variation in grain and texture. Wrap a book with this handmade Farmer’s Felt Nest washi. Two colors are carefully combined while making each sheet to create unique cloud-like patterns. Made in Tokushima, Japan by master papermakers, the cover has a great feel and develops a sheen with use. Includes a pen loop for spur of the moment memo writing. Fits A6 size books or calendars 4.1” x 5.8” (105mm x 148mm).   Material In the Paper Kitchen Fujimori-san’s paper factory is like a large kitchen. Bark fiber strips are soaked in water and laid out on tables for trimming. The paper makers wear kitchen aprons and hats. These handmade papers use much longer fibers than standard machine made papers. Polishing each sheet by hand with the famously smooth fresh Tsubaki leaf (Japanese camelia) finishes the unique texture. Kozo (Mulberry) bark fibers are the strongest of the washi fibers and is the main ingredient in Farmer’s Felt. It is grown as a sustainable farm crop, regenerating every year.
