If you ask around, there are countless reasons why we choose to live in Seattle. Undoubtedly, at the top of our list, is the access to the outdoors and the surrounding, wild nature. From the early days of Glasswing, every summer we would host our annual “Go Outside” event, featuring our favorite outdoor goods, clothing, and gear in hopes that if you weren’t already planning a few hikes or trips to the wilderness, that this could help inspire getting something on the calendar.

Around this this time last year, we were lucky enough to meet Windthrow: A not-your-average gear shop, located just on the other side of Capitol Hill. The store is meticulously curated with clothing, accessories, and outdoor gear that hit right at this sweet spot, an intersection of durable utility and good design. The mastermind behind this project is owner, Nate Hoe. He has hand-selected and field-tested pretty much everything in-store; what you’re getting is going to be good and you will enjoy using it.

On top of all that, the shop is inherently fun and playful with a unique and wacky sensibility that feels easy-going and light-hearted. Windthrow reminds us to find that child-like joy in whatever we’re doing while always remembering to celebrate our true, weirdo selves. In that regard, the shop is kind of like a clubhouse, bringing people together around a love of design, outdoors, and of course, sport. They also consistently host events that range from packed-house release parties to intimate talks with experts. Opt in to stay in touch here and visit them in-store Wednesday – Monday, or for out-of-towners, check out their collection online.

"Windthrow's aim is to embody this love for the practical and the fun. We stock high-level, often imported, apparel and accessories right next to everyday outdoor essentials like fuel and freeze-dried food. We want to introduce people to new styles and brands while being of service to the community with the basics."

Windthrow suggests...

Thompson Lake

"Yup, we're starting this list with a 14 mile hike with lots of elevation. Climb from the Granite Lakes parking lot and watch the crowds thin out as you reach the summit. Descend the other side and you'll be rewarded with a serene alpine lake. Now for the long descent back to the car."

Middle Fork Trail

"Deep in the Middle Fork, this trail feels overlooked. Perhaps it's the lack of an IG-friendly view? This flat trail runs along the river and possesses its own incredible beauty. It can be linked to Snow Lake for a longer day out."

McClellan Butte

"A classic I-90 hike—steep and short with a nice view at the top. The final bit feels a bit like a scramble and caution is advised!"
