Archived Workshop:Natural dye extracts are plant-derived powders that, when measured properly and added to a dye bath, will produce vibrant and rich hues. With extracts, color can be captured from foreign lands — like purple from Brazil with logwood tree chips, sunny yellows from Mexico with curcumin powder, pinks from Argentina with quebracho tree bark, and reds or rusts from Central Asia with madder root. INSTRUCTOR: MAGGIE PATETextile artist Maggie Pate has cultivated a remarkable studio that is 100% sustainable and eco-friendly. Her main focus is on capturing color predominantly with food waste, collected from local restaurants and farms. In June 2018, she released her first book, The Natural Colors Cookbook. Her guide explores in depth how to capture color with food waste and pantry basics, making natural dyeing and sustainable colors accessible — and earth-loving — to all. This terrarium is a simple way to display Marimo, Japanese moss balls. Marimos are a rare growth form of Aegagropila linnaei, a species of filamentous green algae. A simply designed case for writing utensils but also for small work tools such as scissors and protractors. It is specifically designed to pack flat when empty and expand to fit everything you need to get work done. Made from a durable pressed cotton canvas and leather for durability.   MATERIAL  Smooth surface cowhide is tanned using vegetable tannins from the mimosa tree. Vegetable tanning takes more time but does not use the toxic compounds needed for chrome tanned leather. Aniline dyes soak into the leather leaving visible the natural variation in grain and texture. The more aniline dyed leather is used, the better the surface patina gets over time. Pressed Cotton fabric is made with the same machines that were used to make very durable tent fabric.
