Opening Reception:
Thursday, December 13th
5-7 pm, Artist meet & greet
Carrie Crawford is a Bay Area textile designer and painter who has fallen in love with indigo. Her hand dyed panels are part of an ongoing investigation into fiber and natural dyeing. In partnership with Capitol Hill Art Walk, Glasswing Shop will debut a collection of her work over the month of December. These painterly topographies are inspired by landscapes and a deep curiosity in edge conditions, boundaries and borders, natural and human interventions.
Each piece goes through several processes to capture an array of darks and lights, layered with natural dye. The panels take on a noticeable texture and saturation of their own, evidence of the maker’s hand that is beautiful to experience in-person. Each panel is one of a kind and takes anywhere from 10 to 18 hours to complete the dyeing process.
Conceptually the work is informed by place and material. Crawford finds inspiration in nature, often referencing aerial photography for a unique look at natural phenomena, salt water meets fresh, mineral deposits, algae blooms, thermal features, fault lines to name a few.
Artist meet and greet will take place on Thursday, December 13th from 5-7 pm. Light refreshment will be provided. The collection will be available for purchase and on display through the new year.
