Brighamia insignis (Hawaiian Palm or "Cabbage on a Stick") requires a distinct care routine: provide bright, indirect light, warm indoor temperatures (18-27C), and plant in a very well-draining succulent mix. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings. LIGHT Requirement: Needs plenty of bright, indirect sunlight. A spot in an east- or west-facing window is ideal. Avoid: Harsh, direct midday sun, which can scorch and burn the fleshy leave WATER Requirement: Water when the top inch of soil is dry. Because it stores water in its thick stem (caudex), it is highly drought-tolerant. Drainage: Always use a pot with drainage holes and a well-aerated potting mix (e.g., standard potting soil mixed with perlite or a succulent/cactus mix) to avoid root rot. NOTES Ideal Range: Keep temperatures between 18-27C (65-80F) Warning: Avoid cold drafts and do not expose the plant to freezing temperatures. Placement: Do not move the plant frequently; it is sensitive to location changes and may drop leaves if its environment is altered too often.

Calathea lancifolia, "Rattlesnake"

Native to Africa and South America, these plants require a little extra attention to keep happy, but their foliage is worth it with such beautiful graphic patterns and colored leaved. The Rattlesnake variety has long, wavy leaves with dots and stripes. LIGHT: Bright, indirect light. Direct sun will burn the leaves and cause the color to fade. An east, west, or north window is ideal. WATER: Very sensitive to regular tap water. Distilled, filtered, or rain water preferred. Aim to keep the soil moist at all times, but never soggy. Never let a Calathea plant sit in water. HUMIDITY:  Humidity is key with these plants. They would be happy in a bathroom with bright, indirect light or sitting on a tray of pebbles with water below the rocks. Aim to keep humidity level at 60% or higher in order to avoid brown leaf edges. TEMPERATURE:  60-80 degrees Fahrenheit. Calathea plants do not like cold drafts. FERTILIZER:  1x/month during the active growing season.
