Plant-based paint can be applied and utilized in a variety of ways from home improvement projects, an added layer for dessert decorations, and of course, to create textured paintings and art pieces. instructor This workshop is in collaboration with Seattle-based artist Bethanie Jones and will explore her use of natural paint and pigment that was showcased in our recent artist feature, "Sensory Romance." GREENHOUSE WORKSHOP This is a hands-on workshop and includes everything needed to create plant-based paints and guidance on application. Students will mix their own paints and create one of a kind paintings on wood to take home. Workshops take place at the Glasswing Greenhouse, located in Seattle at 1351 E. Epiphytes are plants that grow without dirt and are attached to other plants or trees. They receive their nutrients and water from the air, rain, and plant matter around them. In this hands-on workshop, you will be taught the methods to mount these dramatic plants onto beautiful cork wood, to mimic their natural tendencies. The end result - living art that can stand alone or be added to your plant gallery. NEXT CLASS: Our in-person workshops are postponed until further notice while our shops are closed. Please stay tuned for our upcoming virtual workshop program. Class Description Join us as we explore the wonderful world of succulents. Karen Summers from the Cascade Cactus and Succulent Society of WA will discuss how to best care for succulents in the home. Whether you are a novice or are looking to expand your knowledge of your existing collection, Succulents 101 will give you the know-how for improving the life of your plants. Environmental factors, plant identification, and general care techniques will be discussed. The lecture will also include a Q&A section so be sure to bring any plant questions as well as photos you want to be identified. Class fee includes a mini succulent you take home as well as a donation to the Cascade Cactus and Succulent Society of WA. Karen Summers has been collecting cactus and succulents for over 45 years. She is fascinated by plants of all kinds and is an avid organic vegetable and flower gardener. She has been a member of the Cascade Cactus and Succulent Society of Washington State since 1991 and has served as Program Chair for 12 years as well as plant sale chair for 8 years. She enjoys presenting to groups on the care and cultivation of indoor and outdoor succulent plants. The Cascade Cactus and Succulent Society of Washington State began in the early 1970’s as a study group. They’ve continued this philosophy in their mission to educate themselves and others about these unique plants. They are also committed to conservation of cactus and succulents in all parts of the world. Growing cactus and succulents in the moist Northwest is a challenge, one they have taken on with passion. They enjoy sharing their plants, strategies, and stories with others. Create your own self-sustaining world in glass. In this hands-on workshop, participants will be guided through the process of building a closed terrarium, designed to thrive with minimal intervention. Learn about the history and science behind these miniature ecosystems while exploring planting techniques, layering methods, and long-term care. Led by our in-store plant experts, each guest will leave with a closed terrarium and the knowledge to keep it flourishing. Guests are welcome to bring their own glass vessels to create additional terrariums during the workshop. Our team will adapt the techniques to suit each shape and size. A variety of plants will be available to purchase on-site with a $10 potting fee per extra vessel. A little extra time will be set aside at the end of each workshop to support open studio creations. Kristen specializes in the creation of unique floral arrangements that celebrate enchanting flowers and their natural beauty.
