Brighamia insignis (Hawaiian Palm or "Cabbage on a Stick") requires a distinct care routine: provide bright, indirect light, warm indoor temperatures (18-27C), and plant in a very well-draining succulent mix. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings. LIGHT Requirement: Needs plenty of bright, indirect sunlight. A spot in an east- or west-facing window is ideal. Avoid: Harsh, direct midday sun, which can scorch and burn the fleshy leave WATER Requirement: Water when the top inch of soil is dry. Because it stores water in its thick stem (caudex), it is highly drought-tolerant. Drainage: Always use a pot with drainage holes and a well-aerated potting mix (e.g., standard potting soil mixed with perlite or a succulent/cactus mix) to avoid root rot. NOTES Ideal Range: Keep temperatures between 18-27C (65-80F) Warning: Avoid cold drafts and do not expose the plant to freezing temperatures. Placement: Do not move the plant frequently; it is sensitive to location changes and may drop leaves if its environment is altered too often.

Ceramic Hand-Building Workshop with Alex Roby

Clay has a way of slowing time. It asks for attention, patience, and a willingness to let your hands lead. In this introductory workshop, Seattle ceramicist Alex Roby will guide participants through foundational hand building techniques, creating functional forms through coiling and pinching. Designed for beginners, the class emphasizes process over perfection and offers an approachable introduction to working with clay in a relaxed, communal setting. Throughout the afternoon, each participant will create two ceramic pieces while learning how simple forms are built, refined, and prepared for firing. Midway through the workshop, we’ll pause for tea break with Kwento Tea before returning to finish our work. additional information All materials are provided.
