This fall 2024 exhibit includes three pieces, each slightly varying in composition but all with a similar palatte and materiality. A lightweight wall-hanging that's easy to mount or transport. View the full exhibit here. about Lamine Diouf is a multidisciplinary artist from Senegal, living and working in Antwerp, Belgium. His artistic education began in Dakar where he played the violin for several years in the L'Orchestre Symphonique Melode Divine Arts. After moving to Europe, his focus shifted to other mediums such as poetry, dance, and textiles. In 2020, his weaving practice began when designer Jan Jan Van Essche introduced him to the loom, with his weavings featured somewhere in each collection. Through this collaboration, Diouf repurposes unique fabrics from the production process, creating a closed loop with little to no waste. Using shuttle looms and a vintage book on weaving patterns, Lamine’s weavings are influenced by many cultures and traditions, yet at the same time, his work is refreshingly his own. The Tohaku candle shape is an homage to the 'Pine Trees screen,’ drawn by Tohaku Hasegawa, one of the most famous painters in Japan. The pine trees in the paintings are from the landscape of Nanao City, and he drew it while recollecting his memories of the beautiful nature of his childhood home. The flame is an extension of the gentle lines of these trees, a reminder of a rustic simplicity. Since 1892, Takazawa preserves the tradition of Japanese candle-making with superb craftsmanship while utilizing unique locally sourced plant materials. The thick wicks are made from washi paper wound with dried grass. The wax is made from the fruit of Japanese wax trees that is all natural and uniquely has no drip when burned.
